Exibition opening story

Fatimazohra SERRI

« I started photography 3 years ago out of curiosity, to try something new and break the daily routine. I decided to use it as a tool to express myself, my feelings, And to highlight some of the issues that concern women in Moroccan society and the conservative sector in particular, since I am descended from it.

I grew up in a conservative community, where women aren't allowed to do whatever they desire. And that motivated me to step out of my comfort zone and try something new and unusual in my community.

I have the privilege to express my thoughts through pictures, and reflecting the reality I live, keeping the Moroccan touch but with a sense of originality. I try to make every picture speak for itself, tell a story, and send a message. I have been supported by many and my work is appreciated and this is what motivates me to do more as well as keeping my connection to art more solid. »

My work is essentially based on the notion of family and collective work: the images are the fruit of collaboration between my sister, my brother, my mother and me. They are not just models: we work together on ideas and we support each other. We want to share this beautiful energy and promote a Moroccan culture far from stereotypes.

Most of the time, we prepare the idea for work myself, Othmane and Fatimazahra, then my mother finds the fabrics and accessories, sometimes at home, sometimes at the souk. Before I was born, she was a photographer. She helps me a lot with technique, composition and shows us how to find and use fabrics, haiks and sails. The hardest part is defining a shooting day that works for everyone, because my brother and sister are still students and spend the week at school. And when the weekend comes, the light is not always good. That’s why it can take days to realize an idea.

The photo where my mother and sister pose between black fabrics is my favorite. Her story is special: my mother asks you to help her bring the djellabas from st’ah - roof - and, once on the roof, we see that all of d’alaba are black. The idea came to me very quickly, I explained it to them and they all agreed. My brother helped me compose the picture, my mother and sister posed. This is also how my sister and I came up with the idea of making the image of the pink silhouette on the background of a pink wall.

I am inspired by the environment in which I was born and my childhood memories: how the women in our neighborhood dress or how my mother and grandmother use fabrics and accessories. Inspiration comes from my culture.
