Archive of Devi Tarkhnishvili
From the Heights of the Mountains
Curated by Sophia Lapiashvili
During the Soviet era, there was official photography, distributed through magazines and newspapers, and amateur photography, which was not meant to be accessed publicly. Devi Tarkhnishvili's (1947-1984) photographs belong to the latter, and as such present a unique and personal record of Tarkhnishvili’s expeditions in the mountains of Georgia. A physicist by profession, he became interested in mountaineering at a young age, later becoming a professional mountain climber with a passion for photography.
For many people during this period, alpinism became a means of temporarily escaping from Soviet reality. Devi Tarkhnishvili was among them. His archive is mostly made up of photographs taken in the mountains in the 1970s.
Tarkhnishvili died in 1984, on a Ushba expedition, along with five of his teammates. After his death, his photo archive was kept intact by his family.
With the support of the Open Society Georgia Foundation, the photo negatives were digitized in early 2020 and are now presented to the public for the first time.
