The series portrays the western regions of the Caucasus republic where it borders the Black Sea. The photographs open an abstract dialogue with excerpts from a collection of poems from the Dariani Cycle, first published in 1915. The poems stood out for their boldness and openly described female erotic fantasies published under the pseudonym of Elene Dariani. Elene Dariani is one of the most mysterious figures in Georgian literary history. The poems were listed alongside the work of the Georgian symbolist Paolo Iashvili, since they were not acceptable for a woman in Georgia at the time. After republication in 1959, Elene Bakradze claimed the authorship, but the poems were only attributed to her after her death in 1979. The dialogue reflects the tension between societal constraints and the spirit of female expression, weaving together the era of the symbolist movement with Georgia’s ongoing struggle for gender equality.

The Dnister is a river in Eastern Europe. It rises in Ukraine, flows through Moldova and Transnistria, and discharges into the Black Sea. After the 1992 Moldova-Transnistria conflict, the river became the borderline. Transnistria receives Russian financial and military support, while Moldova remains pro-European. Moldova’s independence relies on Ukraine’s resistance to Russian aggression and faces a hybrid war through disinformation, political interference, and gas control. In Ukraine’s Odesa region, the Dnister reaches the Black Sea near the country’s largest seaport and main naval base. Since Russia’s invasion, Ukraine has tightened its blockade on Transnistria, and cutting Russian gas transit in 2025 led to an energy crisis. Many young Moldovans, struggling with unemployment and limited education, forcing them to leave the country in search of a better future abroad.

The series portrays a Georgian generation in transition between soviet heritage and western modernity looking for a closeness to Europe. The photographs were taken over the period from 2015 - 2018 in a dialogue with the younger generations about their perspectives, dreams and the daily life in the country. Present Georgia is still shaped by the past and the conservatism of the Georgian Orthodox Church. In the patriarchal society of Georgia most women are expected to submit to the conventions.
