The four-year-long documentary photo series is about displacement, the long wait, life in the in-between, and finally, finding a long-awaited home. It follows the journey of a family who spent over 30 years in a former sanatorium in Tskaltubo, Georgia—a Soviet-era resort turned shelter for those displaced by the 1992-1993 war in Abkhazia. When they arrived, the sanatorium still functioned, and no one expected to stay long. “We behaved as if we were on vacation,” Khatuna, the protagonist of the story, recalls. The sanatorium was never meant for permanent living and lacked basic amenities like private kitchens and bathrooms. Families made adjustments—transforming balconies into kitchens and expanding living spaces. Weddings were celebrated in halls, and neighbors supported one another. Once a place of rest, later a symbol of uncertainty, the sanatorium became home for decades. Images document resilience, adaptation, and the long-awaited moment of stepping into a place of their own.

The photo project "Remains of Swamp" is a part of my work documenting the research process for the “BERL-BERL” exhibition in Berlin. The immersive installation, along with photographs that document the entire process from research to exhibition, honors the wetlands of Berlin and the critical role they played in the creation of the city. The photo project captures the creative journey of the artists as they explored the remaining wetlands of Berlin and offers a unique glimpse into the creative process behind the "berl-berl" installation. The photo project aims to show the significance of the wetlands to Berlin's identity and history; however, it's not just about the past; the climate crisis is threatening the future of these wetlands and the ecosystems they support. The project brings to life the story of the wetlands and their contribution to the urban landscape, while also highlighting the need to address climate change and protect these precious natural resources.

This project focuses on the personal experiences of international students, including Maryam Mumladze, the author of this photo project, who were in Aalborg, Denmark, during the coronavirus pandemic in spring 2020. Each student has their own way to deal with loneliness, boredom, insecurity, fear, and despair. Their decision to create a home away from home unites them, but their response to isolation was unique and largely based on their unique culture, social background, interests, and traditions. Imagine being alone in a foreign country, without friends or family, and suddenly getting stuck in your room with no clear idea of when you can return home or what the future holds. This can be an especially challenging time for foreign exchange students. The photo story shows how individuals cope with feeling lonely during the pandemic and being away from home in their own unique ways.

The photo project showcases the Georgian touristy city Batumi in a non-seasonal environment, revealing a different side of the city. The moody and melancholic atmosphere of the city in the off-season portrays a slower pace of life and a quieter ambiance. The streets are less crowded and more quiet, allowing the viewer to see the city in a new light. In many ways, the off-season environment of Batumi is a more authentic representation of the city. Through this project, I aimed to provide a different perspective on Batumi, showcasing the city beyond the summer tourism season. The images invite the viewer to appreciate its unique beauty and character and to experience a side of the city that is not often showcased or experienced. Through this project, I hope to encourage more people to visit Batumi beyond the summer season and experience its unique charm and character in a more personal way.

“Women of Georgia's Mountains" is a photo project that aims to showcase the remarkable resilience and dedication of Georgian women living in mountainous regions. Through visual storytelling, the project showcases the immense amount of work these women undertake while also preserving traditional art forms such as embroidery. This project provides an insightful glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region and the strength of its women. Despite their demanding work schedules, these women continue to preserve and pass down traditional art forms, serving as a testament to their unwavering commitment to their cultural legacy.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine was all too familiar to Georgians, and we began expressing our support for Ukraine from our own windows and balconies. I frequently wandered the streets, and whenever I spotted the Ukrainian flag, I took photos and shared them with my friends. After a while, there were so many images of facades with Ukrainian flags in my online gallery that I became very intrigued by the people and world behind them. Some dwellings were new, others old, but the color combination remained steady - “Freedom Blue” and “Energizing Yellow”, as Pantone labeled them in its color system. Behind these images are real people who openly and bravely support the Ukrainian people from their own homes. I started going door-to-door to interview people if I saw a flag hanging from their balconies. I found other respondents among friends of friends and through thematic Facebook groups. Thanks to these people, I was convinced that a new wave of solidarity was being born among Georgians.

This documentary photo project shows contrast between the resilience of human-made infrastructure and the ubiquitous forces of nature. Artist started the photo project in August 2023, when she had just arrived in Switzerland and that time a massive debris flow struck Shovi in Georgia, motivating her to shed light on the complex topic of natural hazards in the context of climate change and risk management. The project also served as the artist's form of self-therapy, as she physically engaged with the risk zones, and willingly placed herself in vulnerable situations. The tangible emotions she experienced while going in these perilous landscapes also allowed her to develop a profound empathy for those facing similar challenges as part of their daily lives. The project’s vision resonates with Georgia, where advanced monitoring and preventive measures are still in the early stages. The photo story points out the way forward for governmental organizations, NGOs, and civil society.
