Topographies of the Image

These pinhole photographs discuss 'signature' buildings from an era when world-renowned architects were procured to design image-conscious architecture. The intention behind the planning strategy at the time was to change the image of post-industrial places from heavy manufacturing to leisure. The photographs play with the idea of the architecture as heroic, exploring tensions and rifts between the building and its surroundings. A mythology grew that architecture could change the fortunes of cities but this kind of building was also heavily criticised for becoming detached from the locality. The work reflects on the photographic reappearing in the aspect of the architecture. The pinhole aesthetic was used to emphasize the idea of the image - the ‘real’ is generally marked in photographs by super-sharpness. Kate Mellor

Kate Mellor is a fine art photographer based in the UK. Her practice is well established and she has exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally. She has completed residencies and fellowships in the UK and Europe. Her work is held in public and private collections. Until recently she worked as a lecturer in photography at UK universities and now concentrates on organising workshops and giving talks about her work. She holds a B.A, an M.A. and a PhD in Photographic Studies. She has spoken about her work at several international conferences. Her work can be seen at www.katemellor.com.
