Belgrade Refugees
Belgrade, Serbia January 2017
In the old halls of the Central Station a space that used to serve as depots for the trains and the customs, around a thousand refugees lived at temperatures far below freezing point. Their way to Europe via Hungary was blocked. The living conditions in the unofficial camps are inhumane. The sanitary conditions are poor and there was no running water. Most of the young men came from Afghanistan.
In the self-built and precarious fireplaces, a lot of wood is burned. The remains of old railway tracks are used for this purpose and they inevitably release toxic gases during combustion. Many refugees suffer from frostbite.
The interiors were taken between midnight until shortly after sunrise.
Interior shots and portraits face each other. In the interior shots, the people are anonymous. Whereas the portraits exhibit the personalities.
