Another Planet Seems to be Too Close to Me

As a child, my worst nightmare was that other planets – whether celestial or other, metaphorical bodies – were too close to me. I could almost feel their presence pressing down against my own body.

These pictures are highly personal – in the sense that they show the process of my inner feelings – as well as highly detached. In my experimentation with distance and landscape, I try to conjure feelings of being far from and too close to things at the same time.

One day, whilst in a state of dramatic detachment from reality that is altogether not too uncommon to me, I decided to visit a place that was still, to me, unexplored. To visit it, then to expose it.

Vashlovani landscapes have otherworldly appearance and seem to be alien planet right here on my own Earth. Planets can hardly get much closer!

Mikheil Kurdadze

Mikheil Kurdadze is an emerging photographer who hails from Georgia’s capital city of Tbilisi. His interest in photography was piqued at age eight, in large part thanks to his older sister, who took a documentary photography course during private school. Mikheil would often accompany his sister while she gathered material for her course project. As he matured, Mikheil's interest evolved into a profound dedication to conceptual photography. He is committed to using his photography as a medium to express his feelings and emotions. Mikheil's work aims to capture the essence of his inner world, offering a unique perspective through his lens. Despite being a newcomer to Georgia's photography scene, Mikheil won a visual storytelling competition hosted by Radio Liberty, and his photos have been featured on numerous online platforms. In 2022, Mikheil was honored with the Kolga special prize for his conceptual series.
