William Osgood Field
Mr. Fild’s trip to Georgia
An American researcher Mr. William Osgood Field traveled to Georgia in 1929. He lived in Zemo Svaneti for some months and also visited Khevsureti and Kartli (high mountain regions of Georgia). During the journey Mr. Field was taking photos and shooting documentary movies as well. Nowadays, all the materials made by Mr. Field in Georgia – approximately 200 photographs and almost two-hour original film are preserved in the US Congress Library (Washington, D.C.) and US Geographical Society Archive (Milwakee, State Wisconsin).
By invitation of the US, Georgian researcher Mr. Irakli Iakobashvili has been working in the US Geographical Society Archive in the Wisconsin University for 5 months. Mr. Iakobashvili has studied Georgian materials (approximately 10.000 total pages of texts and photographs) prepared by Mr. Field between the 1929 and 1933 and transferred them into the digital format. At present, with the permission of the Congress Library and Geographical Society (according to the written permission of Mr. Field’s heirs – Diana and Michael Fields) this digital archival material is brought to Georgia along with the digital copies of three movies shot by Mr. Field during his visit. By William Field’s direct request, in 1992 Georgia got permission from the US Congress Library and Mrs. Diana Field to present copies of these films to the wide audience in Georgia.
